Getting a commercial learner’s licence in B.C.

The steps to get a commercial learner’s licence in B.C. include a check of your driving record, the necessary knowledge tests, a vision check and medical questions.

How to get a commercial licence

Here are the basic steps:

  1. Present required ID at any driver licensing office.
  2. The driver licensing staff will check your Canadian driving record to ensure you meet the Pre-Screen: fewer than 4 offences that carry penalty point offences in the past 2 years and no motor vehicle-related Criminal Code convictions in the past 3 years.
  3. Pay the $15 test fee.
  4. Take the knowledge test(s). Ace the signs portion of your knowledge test by going through all of the signs on the Road signs practice knolwedge test.
  5. Have your vision checked. Answer questions related to your medical health. You must disclose any known medical conditions if they may affect your driving under medical standards. Your medical record may need to be reviewed by the Superintendent of Motor Vehicles before you receive your learner's licence.
  6. Receive your learner's licence if you've passed the knowledge tests, you do not have a medical condition that may affect your driving, and you have passed the prescreening and paid any outstanding debts or tickets to ICBC.
