Commercial driver road test
To qualify for a full-privilege Class 1,2,3 or 4 (commercial) driver's licence, you must pass a pre-trip inspection test and a road test, as well as a medical exam.
Two tests
The pre-trip inspection test and road test are often simply referred to as "the road test."
Unless you're taking a pre-trip inspection test only, both tests are taken on the same day.
Pre-trip inspection test
The pre-trip inspection lets you demonstrate that you know how, when and why you should do a pre-trip inspection.
If you are applying for a Class 1,2,3 or 4 unrestricted commercial licence, you must also complete and submit a written trip-inspection report.
If you fail the pre-trip inspection test, you may retake it without having to retake the road test. (You will need to pay the test fee again.)
Road test (on-road)
During the actual road test, you demonstrate skills such as
- starting and stopping
- shifting gears
- turning, steering, backing up and parking
- merging with highway traffic and exiting from highways
- driving in traffic, and
- coupling and uncoupling a tractor unit from a trailer (Class 1 road test only).
Tip: Whenever drivers approach stopped emergency vehicles with flashing lights, the law requires them to slow down and leave plenty of room.
- you must slow to 70 km/h on highways with speed limits of 80 km/h or over
- you must slow to 40 km/h if the speed limit is less than 80 km/h.
