Renewing your B.C. driver’s licence

Your B.C. driver's licence will usually be renewed every five years. How you renew depends on your situation:

 

My licence is about to expire or expired less than three years ago

Visit your nearest driver licensing office with: At the driver licensing office you'll have your photo taken and be given an interim licence so you can drive right away. Your new licence is usually mailed to you immediately. (Make sure we have your current address.)

Remember: It is illegal to drive with an expired licence. Renew it before it expires.

My licence has expired and I'm outside B.C. (or will expire when I plan to travel)

Your licence can only be renewed in person and in B.C., so it's best to renew before you go. You can renew up to 180 days (six months) in advance of expiry and you won't lose any time on the length of your new licence.  Visit your nearest driver licensing office with:

If you happen to be outside B.C. when your licence does expire, if your trip will be longer than six months, or you can't renew before you go and you're in Canada or the continental U.S., call ICBC's toll-free number at 1-800-950-1498. You can call collect (250) 978-8300 from all other countries. Licensing staff will be happy to advise you on the next steps. Have your licence ready when you call.

How to renew What happens next?
You need to be retested for your driving skills.

This means retaking the road signs test, vision screening, and road test at a driver licensing office.

Remember to bring: Book your road test online. You may not be able to book an exam if your driver's licence is expired.

Phoning for a road test is preferable in this case.
There is no charge, and you do not need an appointment for the road signs test and vision screening. Please bring required ID with you.

How to renew What happens next?
If you can provide a valid out-of-province driver's licence or evidence of driving outside B.C. in the last three years, you can renew at any driver licensing office. Please bring your out-of-province licence. At the driver licensing office, you'll have your photo taken and be given an interim licence so you can drive right away. When your new licence is ready, it'll be mailed to you. (Make sure we have your current address.)
